The Offinso North District Assembly is to benefit from a 109,542. US dollars Japanese grant for the construction of a Community Health Planning Service (CHPS) compound at Tanokwaem in the Ashanti Region.

The health facility under the Japan Government Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects (GGHSP), will cater for about 6,700 inhabitants from 11 communities in the area.

At the signing ceremony in Accra last Thursday, the Charge d’ Affaires and interim (Deputy Ambassador) Embassy of Japan to Ghana, Mr. Hisanobu Mochizuki, expressed concern about how people at Tanokwaem, especially pregnant women and those bitten by snakes suffer due to lack of medical attention.

That, he said sometimes led to the death of some people since the inhabitants would have to travel long distances to access basic health care, either at the district capital which is 25kilometres away or to the Techiman Holy Family Hospital, 45 kilometres away.

He said the building would comprise consulting rooms, maternity wards, a recovery room and a dispensary.

Mr. Mochizuki said that the Government of Japan had made health projects one of its top most priorities in Africa through the Grassroots Grant Scheme which had resulted in the execution of 54 basic health care projects in Ghana since 1989 by the Japan Embassy.

“The construction of this health facility will indeed support the District Health Directorate’s target of attaining zero tolerance to maternal deaths,” he stated.

For his part, the District Chief Executive, Samuel K. Appiah-Kubi, commended the Embassy for constructing a six-unit classroom block at Sarfokrom which had been converted into a Junior High School for five communities by the Education Directorate.

He said the erection of the facility would not only serve curative purposes but also serve as a Primary Health Care Centre to reduce the pressure on the two major health facilities in the district.

“As we look back on the progress of our collaboration in the past years, we find it imperative to continue to develop the already existing relationship between the Offinso North District and the people of Japan,” he said.
