THE Jaman North District Security Council (DISEC) has proposed the setting up of a separate refugee camp for ex-Ivorian combatants far away from the borders.

This will ensure effective monitoring of their activities within the country.

The District Chief Executive (DCE) Hajia Amina Amidu made the proposal when officials of the Ghana National Commission on Smell Arms paid (GNCSA) paid a fact finding tour to the district.

The tour follows media reports of the influx of small arms and light weapons into the country through the Western frontier from Cote D’Ivoire.

She said the ex-combatants in country during the crisis had refused to stay at the Berekum refugee camp thus posing a serious social challenge to the communities hosting them.

“We need to put in place a mechanism to ensure that their movement in and out of the refugee camp is closely monitored so that they do not go back and fan more trouble”, she added.

Hajia Amidu citied an instance where a four armed robberies took place in the area last month resulting in the injury of a security personnel.

She said through the security personnel had intensified their night patrols and snap checks to keep away more ex-combatants.

The DCE called for more logistics to enable the security agencies perform their duties.

She said the assembly was making efforts to let the refugees head a normal life, especially assisting their children to enable them attend school.

The chairman of the Commission, Lt. Col. Seth Ohene-Asare (rtd.) urged the assembly to increase public education on the dangers of illegal possession of small arms and light weapons.

Such weapons, he explained, fuel unresolved conflicts across the continent.

He said with the crisis in Cote D’Ivoire over some daring ex-combatants would try and sell their weapons to unsuspecting people.

The Chairman, therefore urged the people to report any one with such arms to the security agencies.
