Italy Funds Tourism Development Project

The Italian government has provided an amount of 125,000 euros for the third phase of the Ghana West Coast project to promote tourism in the Western Region, following the completion of the first and second phases of the project.

The two phases were also financially and technically supported by the Italian government, at a cost of 263,000 euros.

Madam Betty Bosumtwi-Sam, Deputy Western Regional Minister, disclosed this when launching the website of the West Coast Destination Management Organization (WDMO) at Takoradi.

The WDMO website will provide detailed information on tourism potentials in the Nzema East Municipality, Ahanta West, Ellembele and Jomoro districts.

The Deputy Minister said the importance of tourism in the socio-economic development of the country and the Western Region, in particular, could not be under-estimated, but expressed regret that the tourism potentials in the region had not been adequately harnessed to create the needed jobs and engender the desire development.

She, therefore, stressed the need for the development of the tourism sector in the region not only to create jobs and increase revenue generation, but also create an enabling environment to enhance the position of the western coast and the region to international tourism market.

Briefing the gathering, Mr. Sampson Donkor, Deputy Executive Director of the Ghana Tourist Board in charge of Finance and Administration, said WDMO’s mission was to set strategic direction, develop plans to co-ordinate implementation, lobbying, networking mobilize resources, monitor and report on progress, as well as to spearhead the development of the immense tourism potentials in the Western Region.
