The Greater Accra Regional Islamic Education Unit has honoured 10 teachers for their dedication and meritorious service towards the development of education.

They received various prizes including television sets, refrigerators, gas cookers, books and certificates.

Ms Kande Awudu of Mercy Islamic Junior High School at New Adenta in Accra was adjudged the Best Teacher at the Unit’s Best Teacher Award ceremony held in Accra.

It was on the theme, ‘Teacher motivation – A tool for enhancing the quality of teaching and learning in school’.

The Regional Manager of the unit, Sheikh Armiyawo Shaibu in his address, said the award scheme was introduced two years ago as a motivation for teachers to give of their best

He said regular inspection and supervision carried out by the unit revealed low morale among teachers, hence the need to institute the award scheme to boost their morale.

He noted that a five year performance enhancement programme the unit launched in 2007 with the support of USAID had impacted positively on the performance of its schools in the Basic Education Certificate Examination as results of pupils under the unit had improved tremendously.

Sheikh Shaibu mentioned inadequate classrooms and weak financial base of the unit to undertake additional infrastructure as major challenges facing the unit.

He spoke on the need to mobilise the necessary resources to improve the award packages to make it more attractive and competitive.
