A flag raising ceremony to mark the 62nd Republic day of India was held at the India house the residence of the high commissioner in Accra yesterday.
The India high commissioner Mrs. Ruchi Ghanashyam hoisted the Indian national flag to mark the occasion.
Republic Day, celebrated on January 26th every year, is one of India’s most important national events. It was on January 26th, 1950 that the constitution of India came into force and India became a truly Sovereign, Democratic and Republic state.
Mrs. Ghanashyam speaking on behalf of the president of India SMT. Pratibha Devisngh Patil said the youth of India must carry forward the importance of intergrity, honesty, good conduct and high values which the culture of the country teaches.
She called for the creation of a level playing field in educational competitiveness so that students from all sections of society can enter the endowed premier institutions.
“As a nation, our aim is to grow and create a just society a goal of poverty eradication and of inclusive growth that embraces the disadvantage and marginalized sections, society can be achieved when our actions are guided by a social conscience and are not devoid of sensitivity” she added.
She said the parliament of the country is the repository of the sovereign will of the people, and its successful functioning is a joint responsibility of both the government and the opposition.
Mrs. Ghanashyam urged that the time has come for them to take closer look at their social milieu whether they are unconcerned about the impact of actions of brethren, or becoming too materialistic a person killed for a petty of money or if a woman is raped because she protest against being teased in the society.
She advised that it is heinous and should never be tolerated for it can cause irreparable loss to the and to the country.
