The Minister of Youth and Sports Ms. Akua Sena Dansua, has pledged her full backing for the Women in Sports Association of Ghana (WOSPAG) and promised to use her tenure to help promote women’s rights in sports in the country.

“Promoting access to the practice of all sports for all especially for girls and women is one of the government top priorities and I will do my best to help realise such a dream of giving girls and women the chance to live a life that is not only healthier and more balanced but also better and with more meaning.”

In a speech read on her behalf by Deputy Minister of Youth and Sports Honourable Reuben Nii Nortey Dua, at the WOSPAG media forum on the theme, ‘Encouraging, enhancing and supporting events of women in sports’, Honourable Dansua stated that she was aware of the challenges facing women in sports and promised to collaborate with WOSPAG to remedy these challenges.

She revealed that her outfit is currently working on a document to solicit support from outside for the development and promotion of women sports in Ghana.

“I will strive during my tenure to promote women’s rights in sports and therefore charged the National Sports Council (NSC) and the Ghana Football Association (GFA) to accord the WOSPAG the needed support to prosecute its women sports agenda.”

She however challenge the WOSPAG executives and members to look beyond government circles as several opportunities exist in the corporate, civil society and international organisations by way of sponsorship and capacity building to promote women’s sports.

Since my assumption of office, as minister comments by some of our compatriots have suggested that this portfolio seems to be the preserve of men and women have no business in the ministry, reinforcing the notion that sports is a male dominated discipline.

“I am happy also that the UN has also taken steps to redirect the imbalance in sports as far as men and women are concerned, the United Nations 1997 Convention stipulates the abolition of the forms of discrimination against women in sports,” the honourable minister added.

Outlining its vision and mission plan to the media, president of WOSPAG Dr. Deborah Cubbage said their vision is to ensure a state in which girls and women enjoy a full participation in sports and in all sporting structures without any form of discrimination or hindrance of any sort and enjoying not only for leisure or for the sake of fun but for excellence as well.

Our mission is simply to advise a policy to be deployed that would eliminate all elements that hinder women’s free and full participation in sports; ensure equity and equality, motivate more women to get into sports and facilitate equitable admission of women into higher levels of sports administration by the year 2020.

Dr. Cubbage was however not happy about media coverage on female participation in sports and pleaded with the media to help in identifying, nurturing, inspiring and bringing together our next wave of generation of very high performing female athletes who would help to turn the fortunes of Ghana’s sports.

We expect the media in its reportage to encourage, promote, enhance, and support events of girls and women in sports. This will make them feel appreciated for the work they are doing and urge other to take to sports in the country.

“I trust that from today onwards, we shall enjoy your fuller commitment to girls and women sports, your keen partnership with WOSPAG , your strong motivation, your support and all your ideas about how we can encourage more women in sports, for this is how we join our hands together to build Ghana, our dear nation through sports,” she added.

“Formed in April 1994 WOSPAG is an affiliated body to the International Olympic Committee’s (IOC) commission on women and sports and to the International Working Group (IWG) for Women and Sports, WOSPAG is also one of the 34 associations under our National Sports Council.
