President John Evans Atta Mills returned home yesterday morning from the United States where he had been spending his holiday, with a strong assurance that his administration has faith in the judiciary and will continue to promote its independence.

Responding to questions from journalists on arrival at the airport on issues which have engaged public attention in his absence, particularly the recent criticism by the ruling NDC chairman of the Judiciary, President Mills allayed the fears of the members of the Judiciary and the public of any intention of government to interfere with or purge the Judiciary of peceived bias.

Asked whether he has intentions to strike at the judiciary in an attempt to purge it of the perceived political bias, he said “the judiciary is independent and I have no such intention.”

The President, who was met on arrival at the airport by Vice President John Mahama and key Ministers, said “the government is aware that the

Judiciary consists of people of integrity whose conscience, professionalism and dedication to the rule of law will lead them to correct whatever negative perception that the public has over the administration of justice in the country.”

Dr. Kwabena Adjei, National Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), last week took a swipe at the Judiciary, accusing it of corruption and bias against the government.

He urged the Judiciary to purge itself of such bias and perceived corruption, warning that the party would take on the judiciary if the perceived wrongs continued.

Touching on speculations that he was in the US for medical treatment, President Mills, who was away for about two weeks, described the speculations as “untrue”, adding, “I am very healthy”.

He said even if he were ill, he would have sought medical attention locally because there were equally qualified medical experts in the country, rather than travel abroad.

The President, looking refreshed, said it was a pity that any time he was out of public view, rumours emerged that he had been taken ill.
"It is a pity that whenever I am out of public view, it is about my health. Let's concentrate on what is worthy and leave all these speculations,” he stated .

On the decision by Kosmos Energy to suspend the sale of its shares in the Jubilee Oil Field Exxon Mobil, President Mills said “the government welcomes and respects Kosmos’ decision,” adding that Kosmos was entitled to take such decisions as a business entity.

Explaining how he spent his rest period in the US, he said although he was supposed to be resting, he spent some time meeting with a number of people and prospective investors.
