The Hohoe Municipal Assembly has embarked on a massive income generating exercise aimed at repositioning the Municipality as the most commercial in the Volta Region.

The Assembly which was until 2008, the Hohoe District Assembly, owed its elevation to the latent resources, both material and manpower, has to give it a gigantic push into development.

What with being the most endowed area when tourist attractions are mentioned and now fast becoming the granary of the region.

Talking about tourist attractions, one talks about the highest fall in the West Africa Region, the Wli Waterfalls, and the highest Mountain in Ghana, Afadzato, and the only monkey sanctuary, the Tafi Atome Monkey Sanctuary.

Then on becoming the granary, with the intervention of the Millennium Development Authority (MDA) acting through the ADCI/VOCA, the Hohoe Municipality is now producing high quantity of rice comparable to what is imported into the country.

The rice is bought from the farmers as paddy and milled at Aveyime and bagged for sale to the general public.

So with all this, the Assembly has only to put it self in the position to harness all this for its development.

Hence, the new Assembly with Victor Hermann Condobrey as the Municipal Chief Executive has started a revenue drive to improve its IGF position to tackle projects which will see to the function of their goals.

So starting this March, a Revenue mobilisation programme is underway. The aim of the programme is to ensure revenue due it at the close of this year.

As a first step the Information Unit of the Assembly was tasked to go out to educate the citizenry on the need to pay all levies and rates to the Assembly promptly.

During the campaign it is hoped that all arrears due the Assembly together with the current ones will be collected.

According to the Municipal Co-ordination Director, Mr. Hope Howusu, last year only 76 per cent of the targeted revenue was collected.

He said from the first few outings the Revenue team has made, returns have been encouraging, making them believe that the campaign was in the right direction.

The Municipal Chief Executive has also been talking of other measures which have started in top year.

With a vision to re-establish Hohoe as the Commercial Capital of the Region atmosphere for business to flourish.

As a first step, he has caused the start of the paving of the Hohoe Lorry Park. The Hohoe Lorry Park is a very busy place since it is the transit point between the coast and the north.

In fact, the shortest route from the South to the North passes through Hohoe. As such the shouts that the Eastern Corridor route from the North to the South be upgraded as soon as possible.

A shopping mall, which will have 20 lockable stores, has also been started at the Lorry Park. Already, just as the first hole was dug to begin work, prospective businessmen have started lobbying for the stalls. The future is promising.

Another smaller mall comprising II lockable stores are also being put up at an unused plot of land adjoining the old Assembly Offices. The rush for space is also on here as well.

Ground has been broken to start putting up the District Court. This is presently held in the Municipal Assembly Hall.

The Municipal Chief Executive said from these projects and the revenue drive, he hopes to generate funds to tackle other developmental need of the Municipality.

First on his list is the housing adequately of all the decentralized agencies under one roof. This will be done completing their Assembly complex.

From facts available to the ‘Times’ the complex which will be adjoining the new three-storey Municipal Hall will also have a three-storey block with enough rooms to occupy the decentralized agencies with some to spare for hire.

The new block will also have an Assembly Hall together with other facilities needed by the Assembly.

According to Mr. Condobrey ‘we need funds to develop the Municipality and we must go out to look for the funds. I am sure with the result of the revenue campaign yielding positive results and from advances from the malls we can start the development projects we have in mind.’

He said after all, shares of the common fund are based on much revenue the Assemblies can generate themselves so with all these in place, it is hoped that the Assembly is on the right track.
