The government has charged chiefs to help create an enabling peaceful
environment for develpoment to thrive.

This is because "in recent times, chiefs have come under severe attack for chieftaincy related conflicts and disputes, which have tended to impact negatively on development.

Some of these disputes and the resultant conflicts have claimed lives and property,not to mentionthe huge financial resources spent by government in maintaining law and order in the affected areas".

Mr Alex Asum-Ahensan, Minister of Chieftaincy and Culture made the call when he represented
President John Evans Fiifi Atta Mills at a colourful durbar of chiefs and people of Awutu to mark their annual Awubia festival, here.

Touching on "New Step Towards Progress and Development",the theme for the festival, the Minister urged all chiefs to forge an effective collaboration with government so as to ensure an accelerated development of the country.

He praised the people of Awutu for the relative peace in the area, which had brought together citizens from home and abroad to take stock of the development of the area and to plan ahead.

The District Chief Executive for Awutu senya, Dr Nuhu Adams complained that the boundary problems between the Assembly and the Ga South and Gomoa East assemblies was disturbing
and therefore called for the publication of a Legislative Instrument on the boundaries to end any further litigations.

He catologued various development projects initiated in the area by the assembly, including plans to build a permanent admnistrative block and said they were all intended to improve the standard of living of the people.

"Let us all unite for the development of Awutu, let us put all political diferences aside,co-exist peacefully as we are doing now and work together", the DCE stated.

The Volta Regional Police Commander,Rev. DCOP David Neenyi Ampah-Benin, a citizen of the area praised the peolpe for the very peaceful manner they had carried themselves, saying that"the material we all need to do anything is peace. we should all be law-abiding and move on".

He advised them to always report to the police whenever there are problems instead of taking the law into their own hands.

At his turn, the Member of Parliament for the area,David Nana Larbie mentioned the construction of a modern community centre by next year and plans for a hospital and second
cycle institution to feed basic schools around.

"I am prepared to die to serve my people, The awutu people", he assured the gathering.

The paramount chief of the area, Abokuadi wyettey Otabil,III urged all citizens of the area to form associations to compliment development programmes at home.

A citizen of the area and Minister of Trade, Hannah Tetteh in a statement read on her behalf asked the Assembly and chiefs to team up and acquire lands for industrial activities.

In recognition of the peace in the area, the Awutu youth presented a beautiful eagle and stool made of brass to the paramount chief and queen mother,Narchy Dode Akaabi, XIV.

There was merry making as the people danced to brass band music and performed other traditional activities.
