THE Deputy Upper West Regional Minister, Mr. Cezar Kale has called for the harmonization of sports development activities into a comprehensive framework to attract the much-needed sponsorship from corporate institution for sports development and growth at the basic level.

He therefore called for effective collaboration and co-operation from the National Sports Council, the National Youth Council, the Ghana Education Service and other stakeholders that have a linkage in sports to enhance a holistic sports development at all levels especially the basic level.

Mr. Kale made the call when he opened Basic Schools Inter-District Sports Festival here last Monday.

The one-week festival attracted pupils from all the nine Municipal and District Assembly of the region who would be competing in soccer, handball, volleyball, netball table tennis, athletics and cross-country.

Mr. Kale noted that the job of a physical education teacher as fundamental and undoubtedly linked to health care delivery and should be given the necessary logistical support, respect and allotted enough periods in the timetables of school to inculcate the culture of physical exercises at the formative age.

That, he explained would influence positively on preventive health care delivery in the country.

Mr. Kale urged the sports boys and girls to be obedient and respectful and stay clear off pre-mature sex with its attendant risk of contracting HIV/AIDS in order to become good sports men and women in future.

He employed them to abide by all the rules governing the various disciplines to make the festival a memorable one.

“Bear in mind also that, being a sportsperson does not mean you should allow your academics to suffer. You can blend the two, which indeed will catapult you to greater heights,” he told the sports boys and girls.

Mr. Kale gave the assurance that the government led by a sport loving President Mills was committed to seeing a transformation in the sector from the basic level upwards.

He said it was in this regard that the government had increased the capitation grant by 50 per cent, which has embedded in it’s a component for sports.

The Deputy Minister expressed government’s preparedness to collaborate with the private sector towards sports development in the country.

In a speech read from him, the Municipal Chief Executive for Wa, Mr. Duogo Yakubu said sports had proven over the years to be an effective tool in nation building adding, “through sports the nation has been advertised for a field, investment have flowed in and the economic, political and even social benefits have been tremendous”.

Mr Yakubu explained that the sterling performance of the Black Stars at the just ended World Cup Tournament in South Africa was a pointer to its unifying effect.

He said the Assembly would complement government’s efforts in the development of sports in general and the provision of educational infrastructure that will facilitate teaching and learning in schools.
