The farming community of Wassa Mampong here in the Western Region was on Saturday afternoon thrown into a state of mourning when residents were informed of the gruesome murder of a woman by her husband on their farm.
The suspect, a 41- year old employee of the Cocoa Swollen Shoot Virus Division, Kwabena Tawiah, allegedly clubbed and shit the throat of his 41- year old wife, Abena Korantengmaa on a farm, about four kilometres from the town.
The suspect, according to the police, after committing the horrendous act, fled the scene, and went home picked-up a bag, joined a vehicle and bolted.
When the Times accompanied a police team led by the Police Commander of Sekondi, Chief Superintendent Cephas Bediako, yesterday got to Wassa Mampong at about 6.50 am, the town was still in mourning over the death of Korantemaa, described as a popular figure in the town.
The atmosphere was charged when the body was being transferred to the Effia Nkwanta Hospital in Sekondi for preservation just at the time the time the police team and newsmen arrived.
Korantemaa, who was popular known as 'Waye Okay', was a trader, fish monger and sells cooked rice in the town. She left behind five children including 21-year old JSS graduate Kwesi Bentil.
At the crime scene, the team discovered that, Korantengmaa was tied to a shrub with a nylon rope, her face was covered with a piece of cloth and blood clot on the face.
Briefing the Times, Chief Superintendent Bediako said, Tawiah, who hailed from Abura Edunfa in the Central Region and the deceased had been quarrelling over several issues including chop money and also over suspicion that Tawiah had been dating seeing another woman.
According, to the Police Commander, at about 8am on Saturday, Korantengmaa left the house for the farm were cultivating maize, plantain and cassava.
“ Tawiah was said to have followed later and when he got to the farm, he engaged Korantengmaa in a conversation and lured her to a distance of about 30 metres, hit her with an object and whilst she laid on the ground,Tawiah blindfolded her, tied her hands with a nylon rope and shot the throat with a knife before bolting from the scene.
The Abusuapanin of Wassa Mampong,OpaninKwabena Forbir ,said, at about 9.30 pm on Saturday, the news reached the town that, Korantengmaa went to the farm and had not returned; so the community elders organised a search party to look for her according to him, found the body of the deceased at the scene of the crime and some people were selected to keep watch until the police arrived.
