THE Tema District Council of Labour, (TDCL), of the Ghana Trades Union Congress has appealed to government to recapitalise the Tema Oil Refinery (TOR) to enable it to stand on its feet in order to improve upon the Refinery’s current abysmal cash flow.
The TDCL has further appealed to government to investigate the TOR recovery levy receipts and application with the view of bringing offenders to book and applying the levy for the purpose for which it was established.
The appeal was made by the Chairman of the TDCL, Mr. Wilson Agana after a peaceful demonstration by TDCL members in the support of TOR workers.
The demonstration was meant to appeal to government not to make TOR a tolling facility, besides giving the board and management, the freehand to manage the refinery in order to forestall the incidence of erratic crude oil supply which causes frequent shut downs and start-ups of the facility with its attendant risks and hazards to life and equipment.
Addressing the workers, Mr Agana said “TOR is one of the most valued establishments left by Dr. Kwame Nkrumah” and urged government to do everything possible to save it from collapse.
The chairman of TDCL, said “TOR faces imminent collapse if challenges, confronting it are not addressed.”
He identified some of the challenges as private companies using TOR facilities to store and sell finished products, state institutions and others buying TOR products and not paying up on times and the situation where Ghanaians were levied to defray under-recovery debts and the misapplication of funds.
Some of the placards that the workers carried read, “Free TOR from GNPC now, “Tolling can’t pay TOR workers:, “Dr Ampofo is gone, Dr. Oteng-Adjei must follow”, “TOR is not for the Ahwoi’s” “who is behind Stra Oil”, and “Mr President, when are you taking over Shipyard Complete?”
