Ghana needs prayer more than anything, says President John Evans Atta Mills.
“This is a country that needs prayers more than anything,” he told a delegation of Catholic Bishops from across Africa who called on him at the Castle, in Accra, yesterday.

The government, values prayers a lot since without it and God’s help, there is nothing that we can achieved,” he stated.

He urged the Christian community to continue to pray for the development of the country, since without God the country would labour in vain.

“Some may take it for granted”, he said “but the government would continue to ask for divine intervention to manage the affairs of the nation.

Attributing the progress of Ghana in various fields such as the economy, sports and democracy and peace to God’s favour and blessings, President Mills pledged the government’s commitment to work together with the Christian community, especially the Catholic Church, in promoting the welfare of the citizenry.

“I believe that we have a common dream of improving the livelihood, fighting poverty and eradicating diseases among our people,” he stressed.

He told the Bishops, who are in Ghana participating in the Symposium of Episcopal Conference of Africa and Madagascar (SECAM), the government was appreciative of the contributions of the Catholic church in the development of the country, saying “we value your support.”

He thanked the delegation for the visit, and urged SECAM to intercede for the country.

His Eminence, Polycard Cardinal Pengo, President of SECAM, in his remarks, commended the President for his leadership style and his recognition of God as the supreme ruler without whom nothing meaningful could be achieved.

Briefing President Mills on the mission of SECAM, which was established in 1969, he said the group, currently made up of 500 bishops across the continent,  had been working to propagate the gospel and promote human development.

“SECAM looks forward to more fruitful co-operation with the government,” he told President Mills.

Also at the Castle was the Angolan External Affairs Minister, George Chicoti, who delivered a special message from the Angolan President, Eduardo dos Santos , to President Mills.
