A GH¢5.8 million students hostel complex has been inaugurated by the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) at the University of Ghana.
The 1,000 bed facility is solely funded by the meager contributions of teachers under the Teachers Trust Fund and is expected to help address the accommodation needs of the ever increasing student population of the university.
The Minster for Education Alex Tetteh-Enyo, inaugurated the facility on Monday and commended the teachers’ union for the bold initiative taken to explore and invest in profitable and risk-limiting ventures aimed at enhancing the retirement benefits of members.
He encouraged teachers under GNAT to remain united to embark on more developmental projects that would create wealth for distribution to members, and urged other workers’ unions to emulate GNAT’s example.
The Minster urged teachers to remain relentless as the ministry would work hard to ensure that the profession becomes more attractive.
A former GNAT president, Mr. Joseph Kwaku Adjei, expressed GNAT’s acknowledgement of the effort made by government to help improve the living conditions of teachers in diverse ways.
Mr. Kwaku Adjei prayed to government to keep the association constantly informed about policies in the education sector and engage the association on matters that would be mutually beneficial to minimize persistent agitations from teachers and organized labour.
