The Minister of Tourism, Akua Sena Dansua, has called on Ghanaian film producers to produce movies that reflect the rich culture of the nation.
That she said would not only promote the country’s culture but also attract investors to the country.
In a speech read on her behalf at the weekend at the third graduation ceremony of Ghallywood Academy of Film Acting, the minister emphasised that most Ghanaian movies currently on the market do not reflect the culture of Ghana but instead portrays western culture.
“Our kings and queens do not ride in luxury cars or wear fancy clothes when attending social gatherings; instead they are seen in palanquins and dress in kente. Unfortunately, in most of our movie scenes, kings and queens are seen in expensive flashy cars and are dressed in fancy clothes.
“We have a variety of local foods that are nutritious and delicious, I therefore do not understand why our actors are seen eating either fried rice and chicken or ice cream any time a meal is served in a movie scene,’ she noted.
According to Ms Dansua, the practice most film producers considered as reflecting the lives of the rich in Ghana, did not help in promoting the culture of the nation Most countries in the world today she said were popular because they produced movies that reflected their culture and subsequently attracted investors.
The president of Ghallywood Academy of Film Acting, William Akuffo, expressed gratitude to the National Youth Employment Programme (NYEP), Ministry of Youth and Sports and the government for supporting the Academy, saying that the graduants would be provided with the needed material and equipment as well as financial support to work.
