The Western Regional branch of the Ghana Bar Association (GBA) in conjunction with the Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolitan Directorate of Education, has organised an outreach programme on children‘s rights, for schools in the metropolis.

The programme was on the theme, “The law as a catalyst for sustainable development” and was part of the GBA’s to be more response to the needs of the general public, as well as enhance the relationship between the Ghana Education Service (GES) and the GBA in the promotion of the rule of law.

Under the programme, members of the GBA visited schools in the metropolis and interacted with head teachers, teachers, school children and parents, and enlightened them on the rights of children and the responsibilities of all stakeholders.

Members offered counseling services to children with special problems.

In an interviews with Times, the Regional president of the GBA, Mr. Ebenezer .A. Kwaitoo, indicated that “the programme is geared towards promoting and enforcing the rights of children in basic schools and thereby making them more child- friendly”.

The association, he said, was hopeful the programme would, to a large extent, “ minimise child abuse” he said.

Mr. Kwaitoo emphasised that, the outreach was a platform to impart legal education to head teachers, teachers and parents as well.
It was also a career counseling session for children to cultivate the interest in pursuing law profession in future.
