FOOD FOR THOUGHT FROM CHIEF JUSTICE

Chief Justice Georgina Theodora Wood, last Friday administered the Oath of Office to 52 newly qualified lawyers at a ceremony in Accra.

In her address, the Chief Justice cautioned the new lawyers against the tendency to turn the legal profession into a gold mine.

She advised them to desist from all manner of corrupt practices and “build for yourselves high standards of integrity and you will reap the rewards of a good harvest”.

“I expect each and everyone being called to the bar today, to excel in whatever field you choose to practice the profession. There is certainly no reason why you cannot achieve this goal,” she admonished them.

The Chief Justice has indeed harped on a pertinent issue which is a worry to many clients, considering the agony some of them undergo when it comes to payments of moneys they are entitled to.

Many clients have accused their lawyers of not behaving responsibly.

It is alleged that some of them pocket moneys meant for their clients, especially, accident victims, while others are alledged to be in league with some staff of insurance companies to cheat on their clients.

If these allegations are true, then, our friends in the black gown and wig are not exuding the respect their profession stands for. We will therefore, urge those of them with bad conduct to change for the better.

Lawyers must lead exemplary life worthy of emulation and refrain from wrong doings that will bring the name of the noble profession into disrepute.

The Ghana Bar Association must therefore, on routine basis ensure that its members who are violating the rules of the association are quickly rebuked before more harm is done to dent the law profession.

We believe that it is essential for all, to be driven not only by monetary motives in pursuit of their work, but love for that profession and the ability to deliver.

Unfortunately, the craze for modern ‘things’ has forced many decent people to turn a blind eye to decorum and honesty to chase wealth.

Nevertheless, the love for good things should not sway us from the path of honesty.
This makes the Chief Justice’s advice to the new lawyers supreme.

We urge our legal brains to take the CJ’s advice very serious and try to live by it so that society will continue to have that confidence in them and rely on them to seek justice when the need arises.
