The Minister of Energy, Dr. Joseph Oteng-Adjei, has been honoured with an international award for his efforts at promoting energy efficiency in the country.

He is among four distinguished world personalities selected by Energy Efficiency Global Forum and Exposition for honours for
their good vision in promoting energy efficiency in their respective countries.

The awards ceremony took place during the EE Global International Conference at the Walter E. Washington Convention Centre in Washington D.C., USA.
The other winners are Jimema Bronfman, Chile’s Vice Minister of Energy, Jonas Hafstrom, Swedish Ambassador to the United States and Dr. Ajay Mathur, Director-General of India’s Bureau of Energy Efficiency.

Dr. Oteng-Adjei, who holds degrees in engineering, power systems and business, has also authored 15 publications on energy and has been a member of the Institute of Electrical and Electrical Engineers since 1987.

In a statement, Energy Efficiency Global International’s Steering committee said Dr. Oteng-Adjei as Director of Power for the Ministry of Energy before becoming the substantive Minister in 2009, implemented “the most successful national electrification programme in Africa.”

It said after being appointed Minister, some of his accomplishments included the development of electricity market rules and regulations for promotion of energy efficiency.

It said that since assuming office, he had chaired the Committee of Ministers of the West African Gas Pipeline Project to ensure that the gas which will reduce the cost of electricity, starts flowing.

The statement said the committee also took congnisance of the fact that his ministry had supervised and encouraged the distribution of incandescent light bulbs with CFLS to reduce electricity demand.

It said the programme which was preceded by an extensive public education on its objectives, procedures and the need to make permanent switch to CFLS, has resulted in bringing energy demand down.

Receiving the award Dr. Oteng-Adjei said it did not come because of his singular efforts, but through the collective efforts of many players in Ghana and other parts of the world, including the United States.

He said the 15.2 million dollars used for the purchase of the CFLS lamps, the distribution and public education might seem high, “however it was a worthy investment as we realized a reduction in maximum demand by 124 megawatts and energy cost savings in excess of 33 million dollars per annum.”

Dr. Oteng-Adjei said since then, “the penetration of energy-saving lamps had grown from 20 per cent to 79 per cent in September 2009.”
