Educate Constituents On Work Of Parliament - Speaker

Parliament yesterday adjourned after com-
pleting the business of the first meeting of the second session of the Fifth Parliament with a call on members by the Speaker, Mrs. Joyce Bamford-Addo, to educate their constituents on the work of Parliament to deepen democratic governance.

The House is scheduled to reconvene on May 18 for the business of the second meeting of the second session of the legislative body.

Mrs. Bamford-Addo commended the MPs for their sense of tolerance and consensus-building that enabled the House to successfully complete its business.

She expressed the hope that the legislators would continue to exhibit same disposition in the next meeting in the best interest of the nation.

Mrs. Bamford-Addo reiterated the need for punctuality and greater commitment to the business of the House.

Prior to their rising yesterday, the House ratified a Petroleum Agreement between the Government and the Ghana National Petroleum Corporation on one hand and Challenge Minerals (Ghana) Limited and Top Oil (Ghana) Limited on, the other hand, for the conduct of exploration and production operations in the Offshore Accra Contract Area.

The contract area covers approximately 2,000 square kilometers, located in the Accra – Keta Basin.

The House also passed the Alternative Dispute Resolution Bill to among others, facilitate and encourage the settlement of disputes through alternative dispute resolution procedures and provide, by legislation for the subject of customary arbitration which have been practiced for years.

It is expected that the coming into force of the bill will help ease congestion in the courts by reducing the number of cases that go there.

In a closing remark the Minority Leader in Parliament, Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, said “irrespective of our party affiliation and background, we have joined heads together during our various committee meetings and in this chamber and have contributed positively for the betterment of our country.”

“We have engaged ourselves in a very fruitful discourse and have discussed bills and issues thoroughly for the good of our dear nation.

Our efforts have manifested in our ability to deliberate and pass many bills and motions of this meeting,” he added.

Mr. Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu touched on the President’s sessional address, remarking that the good people of this nation are patiently waiting for results from his Excellency and his government.”

The Majority Leader in Parliament, Cletus Apul Avoka, commended MPs for the decorum exhibited in the House, especially during the presentation of the State of the Nation Address by the President in February.

Mr. Avoka also commended the minority caucus for their high level of co-operation and also praised the Speaker for her motherly role,” in steering the affairs of the House.
