A total of 127 people lost their lives in 575 reported cases of road accidents which involved 911 vehicles in the Eastern Region in 2008.

This was announced by the Regional MTTU Police Commander Supt. James Sarfo Peprah at the Vanguard Assurance Regional Best Taxi Driver Awards at Koforidua on Thursday.

He said that there were 93 fatal accidents, 199 serious and 283 minor resulting in 964 persons getting injured.

He reminded the people that road traffic accidents are still on the ascendancy even though a lot of efforts and measures have been put in place to reverse the trend but it is not yielding the desired results.

Supt Sarfo Peprah advised the taxi drivers to partner with the police to help eliminate the miscreants and unscrupulous drivers among them.

He said that some of them have allowed themselves to be used by criminals to commit all forms of crimes and atrocities on innocent and unsuspecting passengers.

He said that the situation has aggravated to the extent that most passengers are afraid that such crimes would happen to them when they board a taxi.

He noted that due to the negative behaviours of some drivers the taxi business was gradually losing its respect, recognition, popularity and dignity in recent times.

He told them to be respectful because they are the first line of contact when visitors enter the country.

The theme for the programme was: “Defensive driving—the answer to road safety and tourism development”.

The Deputy Eastern Regional Minister, Alhaji Baba Jamal, urged all stakeholders in the transport sector to make the theme a wake-up call to realise their contributions to society and the socio-economic development of the country.

The Project Manager of Vanguard Assurance, Mr. John Ababio, said that the main objective of the awards was to highlight the need for drivers to assist to reduce the spate of road accidents and other social vices that characterise the driving profession.

Mr. Ababio thanked all the taxi drivers unions in the region for the role they are playing to fight against carelessness and indiscipline on the roads.

He advised all drivers to take personal insurance accident policies or commercial driver’s retirement and welfare insurance policies for their retirement or any emergencies in the course of their business.

In all 55 drivers were honoured with the over-all Best Taxi Driver award going to Mr. Alex Owusu Amoah from Anyinam Taxi Drivers Union.
