THE Volta Regional Police Commander Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) David Ampah Benin has directed commercial drivers in the region to keep log books on their vehicles to enable the police to determine how long they have been behind the wheel.

Those who flout the directive will be punished, ACP Ampah Benin warned.

Addressing a meeting of the leadership of various transport unions in the region at Ho yesterday, he said, “we will be moving soon to enforce the directive and those found flouting it will be severely dealt with”.

He condemned the situation where drivers in their scramble for passengers use unapproved routes and drive dangerously without regard to pedestrians and other road users.

ACP Ampah-Benin advised them to put a stop to the practice which was tarnishing the image of the region.

With regards to highway robbery, he pointed out that the criminals were among them and communicate with their accomplices who position themselves at points where they carry out such robberies.

“Their modus operandi is to board vehicles with passengers and pretend to get off at isolated places only to point guns at the passengers,” he said.

He charged the union to partner the National Road Safety Commission to educate drivers on the highway code and drive defensively.
