Some members of the Dome branch of the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) on Monday demonstrated against the erection of road signs and bus stops at places which they claim are inconveniencing to their passengers.
The demonstrators, mostly drivers mates were in red arm bands, and had blocked the roads with stones early in the morning said they have been betrayed by their leaders.
They said the distance from one bus stop to the other was very far thus creating problems for the passengers who always pick quarrels with them because they had to walk long distances that far away from the old bus stops.
The drivers said what was more annoying was that, anytime they drop passengers at the old bus stops or a more convenient place, they got their vehicles clamped or harassed by a task force established by the Dome branch of the Ghana Private Road Transport Union and the Zonal Council of Dome under the Ga East Municipal Assembly.
They said at meeting between the GPRTU and the Zonal Council of Dome on Sunday afternoon, they were not given the opportunity to put their grievances across as the organizers gave an excuse that they were far behind time.
But in reaching the branch Chairman of the Dome G.P.R.T.U, MR. Osei Nketia, said the intention erect road signs and bus stops was not to harass the drivers but to help reduce the unnecessary traffic which drivers and commuters had to experience on daily basis.
He said the task force is also to maintain peace, protect lives and property and so found it quite unfortunate that it had to result in a demonstration.
The District Commander of the Kwabenya District, DSP Afriyie Ameyaw, has called on the leadership of the drivers union in the country to maintain discipline among members of their union.
He said “when the need arises, recalcitrant drivers should be expelled to serve as a deterrent to others who have the intention of going against the rules of the union and the laws of Ghana in general.”
He also charged the leaders of the drivers union to ensure that hence forth, the drivers dressed appropriately when on duty.
In a meeting held earlier on Monday morning by the Municipal Chief Executive of the Ga East Municipal Assembly, Mr. Ekow Sackey, has set up a five member committee under the District Police Commander of Kwabenya to investigate the disturbances peaceful resolution of the misunderstanding.
