The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) has said that the decongestion exercise was not organised because of the visit of President Obama, of the United States but to clear hawkers from the streets and remove all unauthorised structures.
The Assembly said the visit was only coincidental and said it will continue to seize goods and arrest as well as prosecute traders who engage in such illegal activities.
A statement issued by the Public Affairs Department of the Assembly said the exercise will continue until the recalcitrant hawkers are brought to book.
It further announced that the decongestion exercise is not meant for only hawkers and occupants of unauthorised structures.
Owners of cars and trucks who park at unauthorised places are also warned to desist from the practice.
“Parking is only permissible for off-loading purposes and the 24 hour towing and accident recovery service have been mandated to tow all such vehicles and surcharge owners with the cost,” the statement added.
The statement also warned people who wash and hang dresses on fences at Tema Station to desist from the act and vacate the premises.
It also reminded businesses and the public that the laws on Abatement of Noise were still existent and were going to be enforced.
It, therefore, reminded the public that any persons who play recorded music in public for advertising purposes must desist from the practice since it constituted public nuisance.
The same call was made to religious bodies who make excessive noise, especially in the night, as such law breakers will be arrested and prosecuted, it added.
Shop owners are also advised to desist from piling up waste at the frontages of their stores as it breaches the agreement with the city authorities.
They are to clean their business premises after the day’s activities to avoid sanctions from the Assembly, it concluded.
