The Convention People’s Party CPP has, donated food items and toiletries worth GH¢ 3,000.00 (Three Thousand Ghana Cedis) to surviving Ex-Service men who participated in the peaceful demonstration of February 28, 1948 which led to the crossroads shooting, that killed three of them.

It is recalled that on February 28, 1948, Ex-service men from all over the regions gathered for a peaceful demonstration at the Polo Grounds, now Independence Square, to agitate for improvement in living conditions and demand independence for the Gold Coast, as it was then called.

From the Polo Grounds the Ex-Service men and other civilian counterparts proceeded to the Christen Borg Castle to present a petition to the Governor. When they reached the crossroads to the Castle, a British Police Officer, Emory, asked the demonstrators to “halt”, insisting that only their representatives could present the petition.

The demonstrators however insisted that they would all march to the castle to present the petition. When they attempted to move, Emory commanded the police to fire. The order was disobeyed. But Emory grabbed a gun and fired, killing Sergeant Adjetey, Corporal Attipoe and Private Lamptey.

CPP pays glowing tribute to the gallant men who fell that day and acknowledges with profound gratitude, the significance of the crossroads shooting, especially the snowball effect it had on the increased agitations for independence through out the country.

Today’s donation to the surviving Ex-service men is a demonstration of the party’s appreciation of their contribution to the independence of Ghana. The party wishes to assure Ghanaians that the toil and the blood that was shed for the attainment of independence would not be in vain.

The party remains committed to attaining economic independence for Ghana just as it attained political independence for the country in 1957. The CPP has the keys to the unfinished national agenda of transforming Ghana from a third world to a middle income economy.

It therefore calls on the people of Ghana, to come to terms with the reality that the NDC/NPP after governing Ghana for 17 years have failed to identify the national agenda, not to talk of finishing it.

The CPP calls on Ghanaians to face the reality and do the needful in December 2012, to enable CPP to come and complete the unfinished national agenda of economic transformation for the benefit of all.
