Waste treatment at the Korle Lagoon Restoration Project site has come to a halt, following the expiration of the contract being executed by International Maritime and Dredging Consultant (IMDC).

As a result, the pumping station used for the treatment of waste into the sea is no more functioning.

The situation has been compounded by the huge collection of garbage apparently from the Sodom and Gomorrah settlement which has blocked the pumping station.

This came to light when the Parliamentary Select Committee on Works and Housing visited the place yesterday.

Dr. Asare Boafo of Antwi Donkor-Krakue and Partners, the Client’s Representative on the project, told the committee that the contract work of IMDC ended last year.

He said following negotiation, the contractor agreed to carry out another year assistance maintenance work which eventually ended in June after which they exited.

Hubert Osei-Wusuansa, Deputy Director in charge of Hydro, Ministry of Water Resources, Works and Housing, said the Ministry was concerned about the turn of event at the lagoon.

He explained that, the Ministry was collaborating with Accra Metropolitan Assembly to have the garbage cleared from the pumping station and restore work on the treatment system.

The members of the committee expressed worry about the situation and emphasised the need for speedy relocation of the settlement.

The members had earlier visited Adjen Kotoku in the Ga West District where the bulk market at the Agbogbloshie (Sodom and Gomorrah) is supposed to be relocated.

Ewan Ter Blanche, Engineer of IMDC, which is executing the project at Adjen Kotoku said work was on scheduled and expected to complete by June next year.

The scope of work involves construction of market shed, sewerage system, road network, electricity, school, clinic and fire station.
David Assumeng, (NDC - Shai-Osodoku), chairman of the Committee, expressed the need for a housing component in the project.

He said the relocation of the bulk market to Adjen Kotoku without a housing component for the market operators would not solve the problem at the Lagoon because people will continue to live at the Agbogbloshie market and pollute the lagoon.

Cecilia Abena Dapaah (NPP-Bantama) Ranking Member of the Committee and former Deputy Minister of Water Resources, Works and Housing said there was the need to relook at the entire project.
