A twenty-five member committee has been inaugurated at a ceremony in Accra yesterday to develop framework within which route service contracts, Bus Rapid Transport related services and other transport services will be established.
It is chaired by Mr Alfred Oko Vanderpudie, the Chief Executive Officer of the Accra Metropolitan Assembly, and will also provide policy guidance to Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies and the urban passenger Transport Units.
The Greater Accra Regional Minister, Nii Armah Ashiety who inaugurated the committee said the increasing growth of road traffic in our cities and inability to upgrade the infrastructure to march grow has resulted in serious traffic jams in the city.
A number of transportation routes and services cut across jurisdictions would require coordination which will ensure smooth transportation.
He said as part of the institutional arrangements of smooth implementation of the urban transport project, the Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies are to serve as regulatory Authorities and therefore have the mandate to regulate Transport Service activities including Local Transport Policy and Planning, pass and enforce Bye-Laws, register and monitor public transport operations in their respective areas of jurisdiction.

As a government, we cannot afford to let project fail due to our actions and inactions, adding that it was necessary to form a inaugurate a committee whose responsibility will be to give technical advice and recommendations to ensure smooth implementation and management of the Public Transportation project.
Dr. Daniel Darku, the Acting Director of Department of Urban Roads said the project in collaboration with the Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development will promote a shift to more environmental sustainable urban transport modes and encourage lower transport related Green House Emissions along the pilot Bus Rapid Transport corridor in Accra.
The members include Metropolitan and Municipal assemblies, Assemblies in the Greater Accra region and Central Region.
