Club officials and supporters have been urged to desist from launching attacks on referees during and after football matches.

Such attacks are not only unacceptable, but mar the beauty of soccer and must be discouraged.

The Upper West Regional chairman of the Referees Association of Ghana (RAG), Mr. Seidu Bomison Junior made this call during a four-day refresher and training course for referees and club officials here on Friday.

It attracted 30 referees including five ladies drawn from various parts of the region to test their capacity and fitness to deliver on the field of play to enable the National Sports Council (NSC) and the Ghana Football Association to come out with a list of selected referees to continue officiating in matches.

During the period, the referees were taken through physical conditioning, modifications to laws of the game, powers and duties of the referee, interpretation of laws, treatment of injured players and co-operation between referees and assistant referees, among others.

Mr. Bomison told club officials and their supporters not to hesitate in seeking clearance and answers to decisions taken by referees during matches and desist from attacks.

He urged club officials to educate their supporters to at all time exhibit a high sense of discipline during football matches to enhance the growth and development of soccer in the region and the nation as a whole.

The Regional Chairman appealed to RAG to consider promoting more referees in the Upper West Region into the Premier and Division One leagues respectively.

Mr. Bomison urged the Association to also consider organising such courses for referees in the region at more convenient periods to avoid their coinciding with the Ramadan fasting season which is stressful to majority of the participants.

A retired FIFA Referee and Course Instructor, Mr. Alex Quartey said the course for the referees in the Upper West Region was the eighth in the series of courses being organized by RAG throughout the country to improve the performance of referees during matches.

Mr. Quartey urged participants to take the training programme more seriously to be able to interpret the law and the rules of the game more appropriately to avoid conflict during officiating.
