SAMUEL Bosompem, a legal officer at the Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice ( CHRAJ), has expressed the need for sensitising Ghanaians to matters regarding domestic violence against women.
Speaking to the Times, he said, violence against women was on the increase and must be a worry to all.
“CHRAJ, Ministry of Women and Children’s Affairs and civil society organisations that focuses on peace should redouble their efforts to sensitise and educate people to create awareness for self control to eliminate violence against women,” he said.
He said because of the critical role of women in industry and the family, it was important to ensure equality between them and men so that the women could be empowered to assume their rightful role in society.
Mr Bosompem said violence is committed against women due to certain cultural and historical orientation, and added that it was important for men to support women’s efforts since most of those violence were committed by men.
“If we achieve higher degree of protection of rights and the Ghanaian society accepts women’s rights as human rights, there will be fewer people to punish,” he said.
