The Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ) says the prevalence of corruption in the society has stagnated development in the country.

It noted that money intended for the establishment of schools, road, hospitals and other projects had ended up in individual’s pockets.

Joseph Whittal, Director of Legal and investigation of CHRAJ, expressed these sentiments at the Western Regional consultative workshop on the development of Ghana’s National Anti-corruption plan held at Takoradi on Saturday.

He said corruption has taken medicines from the sick, denied equal protection of the law to the poor and vulnerable.

Corruption, Mr. Whittal pointed out has derived any future to Ghanaian children because they could not get the best education and it has suspended the rule of law resulting in the disappearance of dockets, and exorbitant filing fees.

He said corruption account for the low quality of social infrastructure in Ghana, adding that the low quality of social infrastructure was affecting movement of goods and services leading to artificial shortages and reduction in access to goods and services especially by deprived person.

Mr. Whittal noted that corruption has reduced the capacity of public institutions in the country to perform well.

He said the National Anti Corruption Action Plan (NACAP) is obviously a better strategic response to the weaknesses in the fight against corruption.

Mr. Whittal expressed concern that corruption was increasingly becoming pervasive in Ghana as it has sunk deep into the moral fiber of the Ghanaian society.

The Western Regional Minister, Mr Paul Evans Aidoo, said successive governments had over the years tried to curb corruption but to no avail.

“With NACAP, we will able to co-ordinate our efforts and apply our resources judiciously to combat corruption,” he said.

Mr Aidoo said fighting corruption must be the concern of all Ghanaians and not the sole responsibility of the government.
