Vice-President John Mahama has commended the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) for abolishing the shift system in basic schools in Accra, saying it is an important move towards addressing the challenges confronting basic education in the country.

“It is a bold decision you have taken which will help to eliminate truancy caused by the shift system,” he stated.

The Vice-President made the commendation when he received a cheque for
GHc103,000 from the China Enterprise Chamber of Commerce in Ghana, at the Castle, Osu in Accra.

The money is in support of a project by the AMA to build 50 classroom blocks. It will be used to construct six classrooms to accommodate about 300 children.

The AMA recently abolished the shift system in which a batch of pupils in Accra go to school in the morning and a second batch in the afternoon. It subsequently laid out an ambitious plan to build 50 classroom blocks before next January, to shelter the pupils.

To mobilize the necessary funds for the project, the Assembly also launched an Education Endowment Fund.

Receiving the cheque on behalf of the Assembly, Vice-President Mahama thanked
the Chinese Chamber for its contribution to the development of the country’s
education system, saying, “We appreciate the gesture and hope that it would encourage others to support.”

Hu Yujie, Counsellor at the Chinese Embassy in Accra, who led the executives of the Chamber to the Castle, said the donation was to demonstrate the commitment of Chinese companies in Ghana to their social responsibility.

Mr Alfred Vanderpuije, Chief Executive of the AMA, also thanked the Chamber for the assistance, and noted that the donation would be used to construct the third classroom block under the Assembly’s project.

He announced that the construction of the first two blocks had started in earnest.
