Car Snatcher In Custody Attempts To Slash Throat
In an attempt to escape prosecution, a member of a car snatching gang, Adom Solomon, 23, on Tuesday attempted to commit suicide by slashing his throat while in custody at the La District Police Station in Accra.
The La District Police Command has since the beginning of the year been on the heels of the members of the gang who operated within the Accra Metropolis but are based on La, a suburb of Accra.
Some members of the gang were arrested in a series of clamp downs on criminals in the area.
Briefing the “Times” yesterday, Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Yao Tettegah La District Police Commander said “This year alone, the gang using knives and pistols has snatched 24 vehicles from their owners to either engage in robbery or sell them.”
He said the police got wind of their operations and arrested some of them and repossessed 22 of the vehicles after intensive police surveillance.
DSP Tettegah said “though most members of the gang have been arrested and prosecuted, Adom Solomon and a few other members of the gang continue to play hide and seek with the police until December 26, when through an informant, he was arrested and brought to the police.”
While in police custody DSP Tettegah said Adom complained about stomach ache and was allowed to visit the lavatory on many occasions. On the last occasion, he broke the ceramic cover of the water closet and using a piece of the broken ceramic attempted to slash his throat.
DSP Tettegah said Adom’s shouts in the lavatory attracted the attention of his cell mates who alerted the police rescue mission which rush him to the Police Hospital where he is responding to treatment.
DSP Tettegah said in another development, a member of the gang Enoch Okpoti Ashong 21, was arrested while trying to dispossess a taxicab driver of his vehicle behind the Trade Fair Site in Accra.
He said a Police Patrol Team in the area had noticed the unusual parking of the taxi in the area and in an attempt to ascertain its occupants, the taxi took off in a top speed.
DSP Tettegah said the police gave it a hot chase amidst firing of warning shots which attracted the Panther Unit patrol team in the area who joined the chase which ultimately led to the arrest of the culprit.
He said, the Police later discovered that the car snatcher had inflicted knife wounds on the taxi cab driver and taken over the wheels before the police chanced on the scene.
DSP Tettegah said the taxi cab driver was sent to the Police Hospital where he was treated and discharged while those in custody were being prepared for court.
He appealed to the public to assist the police by volunteering information about criminals in their communities to help fight crime in the country.
