Ghana’s striker Asamoah Gyan has put a temporary hold on his international career with the Black Stars over what he described as unwarranted criticisms and pressure on him.

A confidante of Gyan, Dauda Tetteh, confirmed to Joy Sports' Ernest Koranteng on Saturday that the player communicated his decision to the Ghana Football Association on Friday.

He indicated that Asamoah Gyan also took that decision because “the nation does not like him”.

Dauda Tetteh who is also a footballer said Asamoah Gyan told him he wanted to take time to ease off the pressure.

Regrettably, he claimed, “Whatever he does the nation does not appreciate.”

Moreover, it is not clear if the 26 year old Al Ain star will play for the Black Stars again.

“[Anytime] they call him if he is ok to play, he will come,” Tetteh noted.

Akin to the crucial penalty he missed at the 2010 World Cup quarter-final against Uruguay in South Africa, Gyan failed to find the back of the net in Ghana's 1-0 semi-final defeat to Zambia in the just ended African Cup of Nations, missing an eighth minute penalty.

He has since become the number one enemy of most football fans in Ghana who accused him of Ghana’s defeat to Zambia.

According to Tetteh, “this is not the first time, this is not the second time” that he is being criticized heavily for spoiling a penalty, “he doesn’t know what would happen to him next time”.

Supersport.com quoted his letter to the GFA which read in part, “The decision has the full backing of family and friends.”

The on-loan Sunderland striker has scored 28 goals in 59 appearances for Ghana.
