The Appointments Committee of Parliament yesterday vetted two Presidential nominees for deputy ministerial positions.
They are Dr. Mustapha Ahmed (rtd) for Deputy Minister of Water Resources, Works and Housing and San Nasamu Asabigi as Deputy Minister for the Northern Region.
The atmosphere at the sitting was that of Camaraderie as the leadership of the committee offered pieces of advise to the nominees.
The Chairman of the committee, and First Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Edward Doe Adjaho told Dr. Mustapha who is also Member of Parliament for Ayawaso East, “you are an affable person whose work cuts across the various political divide, we hope you will do well to discharge your responsibilities effectively.”
Similarly the Ranking member of the committee and minority leader, Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu noted that the Dagbon conflict had unfortunately taken a political dimension and advised the Deputy Northern Regional Minister nominee, “We hope that you will not muddy the waters and that you will purge the conflict of any political coloration and help promote a peaceful atmosphere.”
Earlier Dr. Mustapha told the committee that he would bring his experience as a dentist with a spirit of patience and diligence from his military background to help the sector minister achieve the vision of the government.
On the issue of the poor quality of rural housing in the North that often resulted in destruction of houses during the rainy season, Dr. Mustapha promised, when given the nod, to support the use of improved materials for durable housing for the people.
On the matter of rental housing, the Ayawaso East MP said he had the passion to see the young generation move into houses without the headache of paying rental advance.
Dr. Mustapha noted the imbalance in development between the north and the south and reiterated the government’s commitment to the Savana Accelerated Development Authority initiative.
For his part, Mr. Asabigi who had been the Deputy Minister for the Northern Region between 1993 and 2001 said education and especially girl child education was key to the development of the Northern Region and the breaking of the cycle of poverty.
On the question of the seemingly inability of the existence of many Non-governmental Organisations to create the desired impact on the lives of the people in the region, Mr. Asabigi thought that it had to do with the attitude of the people which needs changing.
He explained that people had the habit of dependency which he said would require education to rid them of that tendency and make them self dependency.
At the Forecourt of Parliament it was an atmosphere of joy as supporters and family members of Dr. Mustapha sung and danced to a brassband music.
The Public Account Committee had earlier examined the audited accounts of the Ghana Highway Authority and the State Enterprises Commission.
