National Democratic Congress (NDC) parliamentary candidate for the Okaikoi South, Mr Alexander Ackuaku, has instituted an annual league cup tournament to bring the youth of the constituency to fight for a just cause rather than engaging in acts that will harm them.
The 10-week league competition dubbed “Alexander Ackuaku Annual League Cup," is a tournament with the aim of unearthing hidden talents within the constituency and giving them the opportunity to realize their life-long dreams of playing football to the highest level.
It has 10 teams from the eight electoral areas of the Okaikoi South Constituency namely Kaneshie No1, Kaneshie No2, Avenor, Adaman, Kantsean, Gonten, Mukose, Bubii, Bubuashie and Awudome who will be battling each other for honours.
The competition, which started on March 6, has been restricted to only non-professional players in constituency and will have the winner walking away with a trophy, cash prize, medal and products from sponsors while the second and third will receive cash prizes as well as other goodies from the sponsors.
A team of technical men, including former footballers have been selected and would be present at all the venues throughout the competition to select the best 11 players who will form the Okaikoi South XI to take part in a yet-to-be-organized national tournament later in the year.
According to Mr. Ackuaku, most of the youth in the constituency have soccer as their passion, hence the decision to use soccer to bring them together and preach the message of peace and advice them to shun leaders who would be calling on them to engage in acts of violence and other social vices that would not be of help to them during the run-up to the December election.
He revealed that his campaign mission of developing the human resource base of the constituency would be centered on helping the youth of the area live a better life while doing his best to help eradicate the notion that youth of the area are perpetrators of social vices.
“I am in contact with some sports companies who are planning on rolling out an annual soccer tournament which I believe the Okaikoi South XI would be a part of when the tournament finally takes off.”
Ahead of the commencement of the competition, he presented jerseys, footballs and appearance fees to all the participating teams and advised the teams participating to show some high level discipline and to bring the best in them.
