The Appointments Committee of Parliament yesterday vetted two Presidential nominees for deputy ministerial positions.
They are Dr. Mustapha Ahmed (rtd) for Deputy Minister of Water Resources, Works and Housing and San Nasamu Asabigi as Deputy Minister for the Northern Region.
The atmosphere at the sitting was that of Camaraderie as the leadership of the committee offered pieces of advise to the nominees.
The Chairman of the committee, and First Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Edward Doe Adjaho told Dr. Mustapha who is also Member of Parliament for Ayawaso East, “you are an affable person whose work cuts across the various political divide, we hope you will do well to discharge your responsibilities effectively.”
Similarly the Ranking member of the committee and minority leader, Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu noted that the Dagbon conflict had unfortunately taken a political dimension and advised the Deputy Northern Regional Minister nominee, “We hope that you will not muddy the waters and that you will purge the conflict of any political coloration and help promote a peaceful atmosphere.”
Earlier Dr. Mustapha told the committee that he would bring his experience as a dentist with a spirit of patience and diligence from his military background to help the sector minister achieve the vision of the government.
On the issue of the poor quality of rural housing in the North that often resulted in destruction of houses during the rainy season, Dr. Mustapha promised, when given the nod, to support the use of improved materials for durable housing for the people.
On the matter of rental housing, the Ayawaso East MP said he had the passion to see the young generation move into houses without the headache of paying rental advance.
Dr. Mustapha noted the imbalance in development between the north and the south and reiterated the government’s commitment to the Savana Accelerated Development Authority initiative.
For his part, Mr. Asabigi who had been the Deputy Minister for the Northern Region between 1993 and 2001 said education and especially girl child education was key to the development of the Northern Region and the breaking of the cycle of poverty.
On the question of the seemingly inability of the existence of many Non-governmental Organisations to create the desired impact on the lives of the people in the region, Mr. Asabigi thought that it had to do with the attitude of the people which needs changing.
He explained that people had the habit of dependency which he said would require education to rid them of that tendency and make them self dependency.
At the Forecourt of Parliament it was an atmosphere of joy as supporters and family members of Dr. Mustapha sung and danced to a brassband music.
The Public Account Committee had earlier examined the audited accounts of the Ghana Highway Authority and the State Enterprises Commission.

NDC GOVERNEMNT AND ALL MUST DECLARE THEIR ASSETS NOW! ITS LONG OVERDUE.... Why is NDC Government appointees not declaring their Assets to the Public? Do they have anything to hide, these saintly moralists who accuse so much? President Atta Mills and John Mahama must initiate this for others like the Parliamentarians, Ministers and Secretaries, Appointees to Boards and Commisions and Diplomatic Corps to follow. The NDC are the champions of Probity and Accountability and must therefore do the right thing by The Constitution and declare their Assets to the Public. The last time they came with nothing they left with so much...Ask Ato Dadzie, Totobi, PV Obeng, Rawlings himself, the Ahwois and Tsikatas what they really had before and after Government of 19 years. Now we are in the OIL years where vigilance and accountability and probility are the watchwords. There is no one law for NPP and another for NDC. We all are Ghanaians who went to the same schools. They accuse NPP of property owning democrats. No problem. Now we must see what Ablakwa, Fiifi kwetey, Akua Dansua, John Mahama and everybody in Government and Parliament and Judiciary have now so that we judge things for ourselves after their stewardship. SHOULD THESE PATRIOTIC GHANA WEB FORUMERS AND JOURNALISTS AND EVERYBODY ELSE NOT ASK THE NDC GOVERNMENT TO DECLARE THEIR ASSETS AS SOON AS POSSILE? IS IT NOT LONG DELAYED, OR WE HAVE TO GO TO COURT TO ENFORCE THIS CONSTITUTIONAL REQUIREMENT? WHY DONT THEY WANT TO DECLARE YOUR ASSETS FOR ALL TO SEE? NOW, NDC GOVERNMENT OFFICIALS. WE WANT TO SEE YOUR ASSETS AS REQUIRED BY THE GHANA CONSTITUTION. ITS PAST A YEAR OF BEING IN GOVERNMENT SO LET\'S SEE YOUR ASSETS ONCE AGAIN, SHOULD NDC GOVERNMENT NOT DECLARE THEIR ASSETS ASAP?
