Two people lost their lives in nine accidents that occurred on the Accra – Tema motorway from January to date.
The accidents also left 72 others with various degrees of injuries.
Mr. Glifford T. Adams, Commander of the Tema Regional Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) who disclosed this here yesterday during a rescue rehearsal exercise advised motorists to be cautious when driving on the motorway.
He explained that repair works on the motorway over the years had left many bumps that could easily cause accidents when motorists over speed.
The exercise was aimed at selecting the best rescue team to represent the Tema Region in a national competition in June.
The best national rescue team will represent Ghana at the World Rescue Challenge to be held in August in the United Kingdom.
Assessors from the GNFS headquarters were at hard to guide and select the best team.
Mr. Adams appealed to the Driver Vehicle Licensing Authority to ensure that vehicles were property examined before being issued with road worthy Certificates so that they do not endanger the lives of other road users.
---According to him, the appearance of some rickety vehicles plying the country’s roads seemed doubtful and made people wonder whether they were properly examined before being awarded roadworthy certificates.
Mr Adams also advised motorists to give way to emergency vehicles when they her their sirens wailing.
He expressed concern about the attitude of some drivers who ignored such sirens and therefore constrained efforts to save life and property.
Mr Adams said the rescue exercise also helped to sharpen the skills of members of the Road Traffic Collision Rapid Response Unit, who specialise in rescuing victims trapped in accident vehicles.
Timothy Affum, Public Relations Officer of GNFS Tema Region, said the resue exercise focused on the use of rescue equipment, command and control and pre-hospital care of victims.
