Cape Vars Second Semester Theatre Season Launched

The launch of the Second Semester Theatre Season by the Department of Theatre Studies of the University of Cape Coast (UCC) took place with impressive theatre performances by the Students of the department on Thursday.
Excellent performances from excerpts of plays to be staged during the season caught the packed auditorium roaring with applause after applause and asking for more.
The excerpt from Efo Kodjo Mawugbe’s masterpiece, In the chest of a woman receive the loudest and longest appliance from the students, particularly the female students with comments like, “yes a woman can do it” and “we are with you” as the heroine of the play made affirmative statements.
Other plays to be staged during the period dubbed, A season of three African and one European Plays include ‘Ananse in the land of idiots’ by Yaw Asare, (March 11 to 13,) Tartuffe, (March 25 to 27) and Sikaman by Victor Yankah ( April 1 to 3.)
Efo Kodjo Mawugbe’s In the Chest of a Woman’ will be staged from March 18 through 20
‘Refund,’ written by Fritz Kanuthy and directed by Elolo Chartbun, a lecturer, got the audience laughing and applauding. The play is about the decision by the authorities of a certain school to award certificate to any former students who come back after a period of time after graduation, for refund of their school fees.
One former student response. His argument is that 18 years after completing his education, he had not made any progress in life; hence, his decision to get a refund from the school authorities.
The plays are part of the practical works of the final year students of the department.
Professor Kofi Anyidoho, an external examiner of the department, in his remarks, paid tribute to the late Efua Sutherland for her role in the development of the theatre industry in the country. He prayed that the university would inculcate in the students, the need to uphold quality at all times.
He commended the Department of Theatre Studies for being vibrant department in the faculty.
The Pro Vice Chancellor of the University, Professor D.D. Kuupole who launched the
Season, said the university would continue to focus on assisting in the nation’s development through its programmes.
The university, he said, would soon introduce a post graduate programme in Theatre Studies to train more people in the areas of theatre arts and film.
Dr. Victor Yankah, for his part, said the department started with 14 students pursuing undergraduate courses at various levels.
