An ultra-modern GH¢30,177 abattor built by the Kwaebibirem District Assembly at Boadua has been inaugurated.
The slaughter house will be used by butchers of Boadua and Kade until the one at Kade had been rehabilitated.
In his augural address, the district chief executive, Mr. George Agyemang Duah regretted that often government committed lot of financial resources into development project but as a result of bad maintenance culture, the projects fell into deplorable state.
He therefore advised butchers and the community to take very good care of the project as well as pay the required levies so that the assembly could get revenue to replicate such projects in other parts of the district.
Mr. Duah said as a result of a recent visit to the place where animals were slaughtered at Boadua for the market, he was disheartened by its deplorable state.
He was therefore moved to ensure that the new Boadua abattoir which was completed in June, 2007, but laid unused, was given finishing touches by connecting electricity, water as well as putting in place other facilities “to save it from becoming almost a white elephant”.
Mr. Duah used to occasion to drum home the need for peace and unity as a pre-requisite for development. “Let us remember that development can never thrive in an atmosphere or disunity and unpeacefulness”. He advised.
The DCE called on the people to unite, irrespective of religions, social and political affiliations for with unity and peace as guiding principle, the socio-economic development of the district and Ghana would be on a sound footing and all stood to beneficiaries.
The district environmental health officer, Mr. Noah Owusu asked the butchers not only to maintain the strictest level of sanitation but also ensure that only healthy animals were slaughtered for human consumption.
Mr. Yeboah Dartey, district veterinary officer, said only animals inspected before and after slaughter by veterinary officials should be sent to the market. He warned against the dangerous and unhygienic practice of smoking animals with lorry tyres and urged butchers to endeavour to obtain a meat van to carry meat from the abattoir to the market.
Alhaji Mohammed Abubakar, chief butcher of Boadua, thanked the district assembly for the fine facility, which he described as a long – left need and gave the assurance that it would be scrupulously maintained and only the best meant would be offered for consumption.
