The Birim North District Mutual Health Insurance Scheme (BNDMHIS) has since its inception in 2004 registered a total of 101,158 out of an estimated population of 150,000 people.
Out of the total number registered only 2,670 are Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) contributors.
Mr. Julius Nelimor, the scheme manager, disclosed this during a press briefing at New Abiriem in the Eastern Region.
He said a total of 3,287 pregnant women registered with the scheme as at last year, adding that 2,129 registered in 2008 and 1,158 in 2009.
He said total claims paid to service providers since the scheme started operating, was GH¢3,404,345.71.
Mr. Nelimor mentioned inadequate human resource, insufficient number of computers and accessories, delay in payment of claims due to lack of funds, slow Information and Communication Technology (ICT) programme for data entry and processing as some of the constraints facing the scheme.
Other challenges, he said, were late submission and unsigned bills.
