Six persons died on the spot whilst 19 others were injured in an accident involving of a Mercedes bus and a KIA bus at Abepotia, on the Nkawkaw bypass, last Saturday.
The two vehicles collided head on resulting in the Mecedes catching fire immediately. Five of the passengers were burnt beyond recognition.
Among the deceased was the driver of the KIA bus, identified as Mohammed Sani.
Those who suffered injuries were rushed to the Holy Family Hospital at Nkawkaw whilst the deceased were conveyed to the hospital’s mortuary for autopsy.
Speaking to the Ghanaian Times, the Eastern Regional MTTU Commander, Chief Superintendent Sarfo Peprah said that on Saturday at about 9:00 pm, the Mercedes bus, loaded with about 23 passengers, was travelling from Kumasi to Accra.
On reaching Abepotia, a spot on the Nkawkaw bypass, the driver of the Mercedes bus with registration number AS8675-12, who was driving at top speed, attempted to overtake a VIP bus and in the process collided head- on with the KIA bus with registration number DP 48453-12.
On impact, the Mercedes bus was said to have caught fire, killing five of the passengers on the spot.
He said the KIA driver, Sani also died immediately after the collision.
Chief Superintendent Sarfo Peprah said the 19 other passengers on board the Mercedes bus were quickly sent to the Holy family hospital by the police.
