Three people were yesterday burnt beyond recognition while 26 others sustained serious burns when fire gutted a filling station at Brawire, a fishing community at Axim in the Nzema East Municipality of the Western Region.
The bodies have been deposited at the Axim Government Hospital, 23 males and three females with various degress of injuries were initially taken for treatment.
Eleven of the victims in critical conditions, have been referred to the Effia-Nkwanta Regional Hospital.
Meanwhile, the Axim District Police Commander, Superintendent of Police Victor Oduro Abrokwa, has told the Ghanaian Times that the incident occurred at about 9am when some people were buying pre-mix fuel at the filling station, near the beach.
He said the underground reservoir of the premix fuel exploded and burst into flames.
Supt. Abrokwa said the fire outbreak was ignited by power fluctuation, when attendants at the fuel station attempted to restart the system with a generator and the vending machine exploded.
The Axim Government Hospital Administrator, Joseph Ayie, said the hospital had admitted 23 males and three females and added that some of the victims could not be identified by their relatives because of the face injuries suffered.
Personnel of the Ghana National Fire Service managed to put out the fire after an hour’s intense fight.
The Police and the Ghana National Fire Service have begun investigations into the cause of the incident.
