Government has approved a loan of 15 million dollars for the purchase of fire fighting equipment from India for the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS).

Chief Fire Officer Felix K. Ferkah announced this at a durbar of GNFS Council members and personnel of the Tema Regional Command.

The purpose of the meeting was to introduce members of the newly re-constituted council to the personnel and to give members the opportunity to interact with the personnel.

Mr. Ferkah said government was also making the necessary efforts to source funds for the building of offices and barracks for the personnel.

He said a total of 100 eligible junior officers would be selected to undergo cadet training at the Fire Academy and training school next year.

He, therefore, urged all eligible station officers to prepare adequately for the selection exercise so as to be among the 100 to be selected.

Mr Ferkah further urged them to intensify their fire safety education campaign with the public and various institutions in the districts and regions to minimise the incidence of fire outbreaks.

He cautioned that the new council and his administration would not tolerate any indiscipline among them, adding that those found culpable would be dealt with accordingly.

Mr. Kwabena Taah Korang, Tema Regional Fire Officer, on his part attributed the reduction in the incidence of fire outbreak in the region to rigorous public education campaigns by his outfit.

He said between January and September last year, the service attended to 221 calls for fire outbreaks.

Mr. Korang, therefore, appealed to the personnel to be more proactive in the prevention of fires so as to instill confidence in their fire coverage.

The council is chaired by Nana Frimpong Ababio Anokye. Other members include the Interior Minister, Dr. Kwame Addo-Kufuor, Mrs. Ama Gaisie, acting Solicitor General, Attonrney General’s Department and Felix K. Ferkah, Chief Fire Officer.
